Safaricom Ethiopia is Onboarding 20,000 Customers Daily

Following its national launch last month, Safaricom Ethiopia is onboarding an average of 20,000 customers per day. The telecom operator has also reached a milestone and hit 1 million users in Ethiopia on November 16, 2022.

As of now, Safaricom operates in 16 cities across Ethiopia, covering around 8.5 million people (7.5 percent of the population). The network operator has also set up 66 distributor shops, 2000 SIM selling outlets and hired 653 call center staff.

Safaricom Ethiopia, in its presentation, stated that there is a high affinity for data in Ethiopia, with the telecom experiencing nearly the same number of data users as voice users.

The average data usage per active Safaricom Ethiopia data customer stood around 700 MB in October 2022. In the same month, the average minute usage per active voice customer was 30 minutes. The presentation added that Safaricom Ethiopia has reached close to half a million active voice and data users.

On the network rollout, Safaricom has two live data centers and 561 active 2G, 3G, and 4G sites, out of which 61 are shared. 931 more sites are under construction.
